Resident Evil 4 I think is the best game of all time, number 1 on my list of favorites for sure. PC version blows and so does the PS2 version. They both look and play like shit. The gamecube version is primo all the way.
The first and main reason I like the game is because it is so beautiful. It has a gritty look to it that only it has out of all games. The shading and the textures are very detailed. The candles lite up like real candles. The bodies exploding from dynamite still gets me hyped up. It looks so real when they burst into blood I can't get over the realistic feeling when it happens. Shotgun blasting heads is super cool and it looks and sounds so good I prefer the shotgun over any other gun just to watch each head explode over and over again. Leon's head being chainsawed is so awesome it gets my adrenaline flowing every time. New games like Splinter Cell made 8 or 9 years later don't have heads exploding, they have piss poor blood squirts that looks like it is imaged over. Developers should take note of heads and bodies flying apart in a realistic manner. If your going to have violence do it right for fuck sake.
The inventory management system is brilliant and adds a strategy to the way you will survive on. The tension throughout the game is high and using only what you need is crucial to success. The variety of the game is strong and the scenery and the enemy's changing as the game progressed is something that most all games lack. The refreshing differences make the game an experience that doesn't get boring every time I go back to play. The money system and buying from the dealer makes the game even more playable with the fact that the game allows you to keep all your shit when you play it through again. It is a major reward, that is another thing that most games don't have. I feel fresh to play new with no weapons or I feel fresh to play on a second or fifth time rocket launching every head with the infinite rocket launcher.
I think the way they have the controls is perfect and the way the game plays is spot on. This is a major fuck up with a lot of games. There could be a major game coming out and it could be very pretty and play like total shit. I'm talking about the game mechanics. RE 4 is smooth and flows nicely through. Having to turn instead of being able to run around like an idiot adds to the tension of infected villagers coming up behind you. The way the view is over the shoulder hasn't been duplicated. It is almost like Leon is running a little to the side as you go forward. It seems intentional and it adds to it's unique feel. Gears of War kinda has this control feel, yet not so close.
Other Resident Evil Games I simply don't give two shits about. I wasn't a fan of the others before and I was anticipating RE 5 to come out only to be hugely disappointed. That game is truly a let down and when I got the end I was like is that it, is that the shitty ending. It was like the game never went anywhere. I was waiting for it to and yet the ending was a relief that I was done playing the dull matter. Resident Evil 6 I didn't anticipate because I had a feeling it would be bad. I gave it a play and it started out good and I was digging it then I realized that I was basically playing Left for Dead. They took my beloved franchise and slapped together a Left for Dead? Fuckers. I read an article that they have heard the fans response and are going back to the roots. Is this the weird shit before RE4 or is RE4 the roots they mean? Since they have showed me that they completely had their heads up their asses with 5 and 6 they will likely fuck the next one up. I will give it a play of course because I must know for myself. RE4 was out of no where and so I realize that any game in any genre or franchise could be the next big gem.
